Please share a memory of Brian to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Brian Martin Hesler, 58, of Valatie, New York, passed away peacefully at his home on April21, 2024 after a long battle with an alcohol substance use disorder.
Brian was born in Niskayuna to James Edward Hesler and Janet May Barnthouse on November 21, 1965. He attended Mont Pleasant High School and graduated in 1983. He was the youngest of seven siblings and always had a knack for making people laugh. Brian worked as a New York State Corrections Officer for more than 30 years before retiring in2022. It wasn't an easy job and it took its toll in many ways, but he always worked hard to provide everything he could for his family. Brian was known for his sense of humor and the kindness he displayed towards many. For many years, he was active with the American RedCross as a blood and plasma donor and he never hesitated to help someone in need.
Brian loved his family, especially his two children. He will be missed by many. For many years, Brian kept his struggles with addiction a secret, an unfortunate stigma that is all too common. His family hopes that by sharing this it may encourage others to get the help they need.
He is survived by Susan Hesler, his daughter Samantha Hesler (Owen Smith), his son Jonathan Hesler, his beloved dog Willow, his six siblings: Jim Hesler (Marcia Hesler),Barbara Pearsall (Greg Pearsall), Paul Hesler (Sharon Hesler), Helen Mead (Rande Mead),Kathy Garretto (Paul Garretto), David Hesler, and his many nieces, nephews, and their children. He was predeceased by his parents James and Janet Hesler, and his son Benjamin Hesler.
A small graveside memorial will be held for the family at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Schenectady on May 16 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to some of Brian's favorite charities including the American Red Cross, St. Jude Children's Hospital, and the Columbia Greene Humane Society.
