I have such loving and fond memories of Alice. I worked with her at cmh for approximately 20 years. I learned so much from her and we always made work fun. Unfortunately this is a little late since I just heard of her passing. Hope she's getting her coffee wherever she is. Thank you alice

Alice and I go back to 1971 when as a new graduate nurse I requested to work on M4 with her (to the surprise of our Director of Nursing) as my first assignment. I had worked with her as an aide for several years during nursing school and we formed a bond. We had a great time- professionally and personally. She taught me some things that carried throughout my nursing career. After I left CMH I would meet Alice in the Valatie Grand Union and have a good gab. Lost track of her after it closed but she came back into my life when my daughter married one of her best friend's son. We did Red Hatters together for a while but Alice's declining health took her out of my life again as she became a resident in Pine Haven. I will miss her cunning sense of humor. There are many of us who have learned many great things from her for our nursing career and have had many a good laugh. Rest peacefully Alice

Alice was a lovely neighbor and friend. Walt and I would take a walk to her place and coffee was always on as we visited under her tree. And springtime with all the daffodils she planted on her retirement were absolutely gorgeous. We went to museums together and she was so observant when looking at paintings and interested in all the exhibits. She did often get very close to the paintings and we were often given warnings! These visits were followed by lunch somewhere. On a couple of our travels I got us lost, and Alice never complained. We traveled all over Columbia County during our fall foliage drives, Alice relating to me her travels with her Dad through the county. And the Christmas lights never failed to to delight her. She loved to walk on her property and took strolls through the neighborhood, keeping all of us abreast of the goings on. And she was always willing to take care of our cats and plants when we were away on vacation. As late as last year, she kindly participated in a film my daughter was making. What a trooper. She will be sorely missed. My condolences to the family. I know she enjoyed being part of all the family gatherings.

I will always remember Alice. As a new student nurse working as an aide years ago at CMH, Alice was a force to be reckoned with. She was firm, an excellent nurse with a slight sense of humor that could be seen around the edges. Everyone of the workers were in awe of Alice. You jumped when she talked or requested something. She will always be in my memories as I will always remember her as started my nursing career. All the nurses and workers knew Alice Hornung back then and knew she was a great nurse! May she rest in piece. My sincere condolences to her family. Sue Schrader RN

July 1980 straight out of high school I became a nurses aide at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson NY and I got sent to the 11-7 shift (overnights) while I waited for a F/T 7-3 shift to become available. I was a “float” and got sent to whatever floor needed help that night and I quickly learned that each floor had their own way of doing things and I had my favorite floors and my “not so” favorites. The 5th floor became a “not so” from the first time I set foot on it with my soft voice and deer-in-the-headlight look on my face. Alice was the RN in charge on that floor 11-7 shift and I remember holding back the tears many many times with her blunt remarks to my “silly” questions while the regular 5th floor staff busied themselves as not to bother her. But for the 11 months I worked the 11-7 shift many new nurses aides came and went but I remained and actually looked forward to working with Alice because she ran a tight ship and I knew what she expected from her staff and I made sure I did everything the way she wanted and although I don’t remember her ever saying “good job” or thank you to anyone, I knew she noticed and appreciated her tight ship being kept afloat. Fast forward to 2016 after many tries I finally finished and graduated from nursing school and many of the things I learned from Alice I kept with me throughout the years.
Thank you Alice for being you and for expecting the best from your staff.

Our Mother, Mary Meacher, and Alice were coworkers and friends for most of their lives. Alice would come to visit and Mom would make her famous cabbage rolls. I remember Alice having a very large dog, which was no match for Moms dachshund (who always growled at poor Alice). Mom and Alice lost touch around 2020. We never knew how to reach her when Mom passed but I’m smiling now, knowing they are sharing some great nursing stories in Heaven.

Alice and I carpooled to MacHadyn to usher and had many enjoyable conversations about her days as a nurse and her enjoyment of sitting under her big shade tree to read the paper. She will be missed by many and the family has my sympathy at this difficult time.
