Please share a memory of Karen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Karen P. "KJ" Leggett, 63, passed away on September 29, 2023 in Albany, NY. Born in Hudson, NY to Chester and Almeda Pulver on August 5, 1960, Karen's upbringing on her family's farm fostered a lifetime of persevering work ethic, dedicated volunteerism, and caring love that revealed a true servant's heart.
Karen attended Chatham High School and competed in gymnastics and cross-country before graduating in 1978. She worked at Yury's School of Gymnastics in Albany, NY for 20 years before starting KJ's Gymnastics in 1999. After starting in a small one-bay garage with 20 students in Red Rock, KJ's grew to over 175 students in less than 3 years, at which time she relocated to the business's current location in Valatie, NY. Since then, KJ's Gymnastics has grown to become a community institution that serves thousands of children each year through classes, camps, birthday parties, and special events. Gymnastics was always a passion for Karen, but her mission grew beyond only the sport to providing a safe and fun environment for children to learn and become confident in themselves.
Karen was a devoted patron and whole-hearted volunteer for the Mac-Haydn Theatre for over 25 years. Her first show was in 1976 at the fairgrounds, but she'd always tell the story of how she became a lifer due to the kindness of Lynn Haydn and Linda McNish, who reissued them tickets, free of charge, after a medical emergency prevented them from finishing the show! Between volunteering as the Supervising Head Usher, selling ad space in the programs, making countless actor meals for dress rehearsals and strike nights, and baking desserts for Backstage Coffeehouse, the Mac was an immense source of joy and friendship for Karen.
Mrs. Leggett was a faithful 40 year member of the Ghent Reformed Church. She volunteered and made food for many a community dinner, fundraiser, and family party. Just like at the Mac, her desserts were always highly sought after!
Karen is survived by her husband, Richard Leggett Jr., and sons, Stephen and Brian Leggett (Meredith), as well as her brother, Robert Pulver, sister, Marbry Gansle (Steve), In-laws, Richard and Martha Leggett Sr, and several nieces, nephews and beloved family members. She is predeceased by her parents, Almeda & Chester Pulver, and sister, Marion Chavin. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ghent Reformed Church or the Mac-Haydn Theatre. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to these organizations for their love and support.
Visitation will be held at the Raymond E. Bond funeral home on Thursday, October 5, 2023 from 3 to 6 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Ghent Reformed Church on Friday, October 6, 2023 at 11 a.m. Burial will immediately follow in the cemetery at Ghent Reformed Church, and a lunch reception will be provided.
