Obituary of Susan Shank

Please share a memory of Susan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Susan Winifred Shank, 74, of Valatie, New York passed away peacefully at home on July 18, 2024. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jeremy Shank; one son, Aaron; and three granddaughters. Susan was born in Albany and spent most of her adult life in the Finger Lakes Region. She attended Nazareth College in Rochester where she earned both Bachelor's and Master's degrees. She taught Special Education in Wayne County, NY school districts. After retiring, Susan learned to weave and became proficient on her loom, and to prove it she wove innumerable attractive scarves and table linens. She also learned to mend books, which she enjoyed doing at the Horseheads, NY Library. Sue's talent for gardening gave summers the colors they demanded. An occasional bear invaded the gardens, but she refused to chase them away. Weekends were also dedicated to watching Jeremy don a kilt and march in parades with his bagpiping band. Susan thanks her husband for his unwavering attention during her final months. She also extends thanks to her family and friends who visited and called, and she gives a big wave to those dear friends who retired to the Carolinas. Thanks also to Warren and JoAnn Mistler for their many kindnesses. And a very special thanks to her brother-in-law Peter Iacovelli, who provided fellowship, gave rides, picked up groceries, and kept us informed of the wildlife in the area. There will be no calling hours and a private family service will be held at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Community Hospice of Columbia and Greene County, 47 Liberty Street, Catskill, NY 12414
