Pat was my first boss when I was six or 7 years old. I helped my brothers stack bricks onto pallets when the old mill in Valatie was demolished in the 1980s.
I remember even then he had a kind, approachable presence. Years later I would see him walking Main Street, his mustache whiter than when I was small, but he had the same friendly way about him.
Pat was the kind of neighbor every town should have. I was glad to know him.
My prayers go out to his family.

Dear Liz,
I am sorry you lost your husband too soon. The only way to get through sometimes is to remember you WILL meet again in heaven, that he is forever in your heart, and very much ALIVE in your memories. I pray our Lord continues to sustain you and heal your tender broken heart. May HIS love, peace, and guidance sustain and carry you through this most heartbreaking time. This prayer is for your family and loved ones as well. Pat will celebrate this Easter at the Lord's table and his tears will be wiped away.
Sincerely,
Christine Chamberland

When I met Pat at Siena 50 years ago he impressed me as indeed as a Renaissance man. I forget the English class we were in, but I couldn't forget Pat. He was a person to know for sure. Who was this character as rich in personality and gab as those we read about in class? My sincerest condolences to his family. However, that he lived a full life devoted to helping others and enriching his community brings a smile and gratitude...Well lived Patrick! God bless you and those you loved. Rest in peace friend. Namaste.

I always thought it was a plus when I'd run into Pat at a function or church. His wit and sense of humor was infectious to me. He looked at the human comedy through a pair of unique glasses. I treasured his observations and his perspective. I might not always agree with him, but I liked to hear what he had to say on a variety of issues.
If I could give Pat a job, I would give him the job of editorial cartoonist. His approach to issues and events tend to hit many of the basic characteristics of our world. Pat had a way to cut to the quick when it came to our human condition.
At many of our interchanges, Pat was an iconoclast. He challenged many of the presupposed norms of society. To me, he was a younger version of Andy Rooney. He questioned things and at times reminded us that the emperor was naked.
I am glad that Pat's life and mine intersected at multiple points. Christine and I send prayers, love and condolences to Liz and Emily. Eric and Christine Blahut

One of the finest human beings I know. Truly intelligent and caring, serving not for status or power, but for what he felt was best for everyone. A person I looked forward to seeing and talking to whenever the opportunity arose. Although not here physically anymore, he remains in the hearts and minds of many of us. Our thoughts and condolences to Pat's family.

I remember Pat as having a great sense of humour and being a good listener in his role as Chairman of the CC Board of Supervisors. He was a joy to speak with and always so proud of Emily as she became a Nurse Practitioner and recently going beyond. Sincere condolences to Liz, Emily and all of his family.

What a wonderful obit that clearly captured the spirit that was Pat Grattan. I'll fondly remember Pat for his humor, wit, stories and charm but mostly for his empathy for a young, then-shy mom to be who was having problems with the former owner of her horse. He saved the day (that young girl was me) and I treasure that, and many other memories. He was one of a kind, in the best way. RIP Pat

We were never really close friends, but my memories go back to 40 years ago. My husband and I were new to our relationship and we used to stop at the Val-Kin many nights after work. Pat and Liz were often together there. Liz dropping off the wonderful pies she made. Banana Cream was my favorite. Pat would be standing at the bar conversing with his father in-law or any one else. My husband included. Later, we would often run into him at Mario’s, buying something for a home project. Wherever you ran into him, it was a good conversation.
My condolences to his family and all his friends. He will be missed by many. Godspeed Pat.
