Obituary of Joan A. Sheldon

Joan A. Sheldon, 89, loving mom, grandmother, and wife. Joan passed away peacefully with her devoted family and under the wonderful nursing care at Teresian House in Albany, NY on January 29, 2024. Joan was born at Brady Maternity in Albany to Savina Lennon Roberts (mother) and Charles Roberts (father). Joan attended St. James and Vincentian Institute, studying business and was involved in the Vinetts, school formal dance group. She was very active with school activities and "went steady" with her boyfriend, Bruce; later becoming her husband of sixty-eight years. After graduating, Joan worked for New York Telephone as an operator and clerical associate. Shopping with her sister on Pearl Street and traveling to NYC were some of her favorite social activities. Joan would spend time with her expanded family, as they showed Joan and Bruce to support social organizations and local needs. On May 14, 1955, she married Bruce. Living in Albany and Colonie. Many wonderful family parties occurred there. In 1971, the Sheldon's moved to Kinderhook, NY. Moving to Columbia County was a very satisfying experience, as the Sheldon's held a family history of over 120 years there. Joan loved the quiet country lifestyle, as she took close care of her family. Social gatherings with neighbors, friends, and family made for great memories. At home, Joan managed the family budget and always had delicious meals and desserts waiting for her family, while saving enough money for the summer trips. Known as the strongest Sheldon family member, she led a family of boys toward amazing successes and provided the solid base of her family's strength and unity. Her family dedication, unwavering love, and commitment to her husband modeled family loyalty. Joan's witty statements, invaluable advice, and amazing ability to live a simple life will be missed. Joan is survived by her husband, Bruce (90); her sons, Paul (Danielle), Brian (Heather); grandsons, Christopher, Patrick, and Kian, sister in-law, MaryAnn Sheldon. Nine nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents; son, Michael; sister, Mary Reilly; brother in-law, Richard Reilly; brother in-law, Terry Sheldon. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Teresian House for helping with quality of life to Joan. A wake will be held at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home in Valatie, NY on Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 10 am to 12 pm. On the same day, a funeral service mass will be held at Saint John the Baptist in Valatie at 12:30 pm. Burial will be held after at 2 pm at Calvary Cemetery in Glenmont, NY.
