George Gust Papas, 93, passed away on 1/16/26. George was born in Pittsfield, MA on April
23,1932 to Gust and Zoe (Hadjiantoniou) Papas. He graduated from Pittsfield High School
in 1950. He served in the army during the Korean War. He later graduated from Devry
Institute in Chicago. He was predeceased by his parents, and brother Bill Papas.
George married his wife Irene on 10/8/60 and they were married for 65 years. They spent
most of their married life living in Woodstock, NY where they raised their 4 children. George
worked at IBM in Kingston, NY for 36 years. He enjoyed photography and took many
beautiful photographs which he would mount and frame. He took pride in maintaining their
house and lawn. He enjoyed swimming, and after work in the summer could be found at
the Zena Rec Park doing laps. After retirement, he enjoyed travelling with his wife Irene,
their good friends, brother Bill, and sister-in-law Helen. He had 3 grandsons by son Chris
and daughter in-law Laurie. George mellowed with age like the wine he enjoyed. He loved
being a grandfather, or a Papou, and took an interest in their lives and what they were up to.
In 2022, he and Irene moved in with their son Chris, wife Laurie, and grandson Simon in
Valatie NY. George enjoyed being with family, eating delicious food and family gatherings.
He loved all dogs including his own, Pierre and Zeppelin, both of which he enjoyed taking
for regular walks. He spent time watching sports and could always be found keeping up
with current events on YouTube. George could tell you all about what was going on with the
Ukraine War at any moment. In 2025, he and Irene moved into the Teresian House, Center
for the Elderly, in Albany NY. He is survived by his wife Irene, son Alex Papas; daughter BJ
Papas and her significant other Duke Gardella; son Chris Papas and his wife Laurie Papas;
daughter Denise Meechan and her husband Peter Meechan; Grandchildren Jake Papas and
his wife Rosa Papas; Eric Papas Ng and his husband Cody Ng; and Simon Papas; as well as
many loving relatives. He will be missed by his family, friends, and most of all by his wife
Irene.
Calling hours will be held at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook St, Rt 9,
Valatie, NY 12184 on Friday 1/23/26 from 2pm-4pm. A service will start at 3:30 PM.
