Coach Jim Fazzone posted a condolence

Derrick was the kind of player, the kind of person a coach wants to see walk through the door and go on the court for a basketball team tryout, the kind of person and player you could get your hands on if you are a coach who truly cares about what he/she is doing.
A coach cannot make every player a super star, but a coach can build on a player’s talent, expand on a player’s effort and drive. A coach can “point” a player in the right director and most importantly, encourage that player to make the most of the opportunity that presents itself and then sit back and enjoy the success.
That was Derrick in a nutshell. A player and a person who wanted to be pointed in the right direction and what to excel in the game of basketball as well as life itself.
He was a joy to coach as were his teammates back on those AAU basketball teams.
As his coach, you did not have to say a lot to Derrick. Give him a few pointers, get him back on the court. When you looked down at the bench for a substitution during the game, Derrick always had that look on his face that he wanted back in.
If Derrick had one shortcoming, it would be that sometimes he would try too hard. Some coaches are fond of saying to a player: “If I ask you to run through a brick wall, would you do it?” Most players would do that once and then say forget it. Derrick would run through the wall over and over again until he found a way to break through and then he would give you that smile and he would say: “I told you I could do it.”
As for his personality, toughness comes to mind first. And he carried that toughness with him every time he walked on the court, and he had the respect of his teammates who knew he was there with them at every turn.
He was a true teammate.
All of that translated from those days on the basketball court to his everyday life after the games had been played as witnessed by the many friendships he kept with those teammates.
Derrick always had a fondness for playing basketball for Coach Kelly. Coach Kelly, as everyone knows, thinks the most of all of her players, and Derrick was always high on that list.
As an assistant coach with her, I was fortunate to be in lockstep with her that we wanted the best of every player – success and happiness not only on the court but off the court.
The loss is profound, and Derrick will be missed.

Barry & Family,
We would like to extend our sincerest sympathies.
Derek, who I referred to as “Nutsy” had a way to draw people toward him and warm them with just a smile.
Nothing but fond memories of carefree young man.

Also, this picture was framed years ago and has been in my house since I was a kid. I believe he is the other kid in this picture when we played east greenbush pop warner. After posting the last message, I realized this picture was sitting on my shelf. I hope you can enjoy these, great memories.

I used to go the YMCA growing up and play pickup basketball. I went to Averill Park and graduated in 2020. I played Derek both in basketball/football. And played against Dylan in basketball too. Most athletes at our school knew the last name Ouimette, Derek was a super crafty basketball player and he was good at backing up what he was tellin’ ya, haha. When I played him my senior year of football, we laid a pretty good hit on each other. We both got up and started laughing. Even though I never became close with him, I always held mutual respect for how talented he was. He will live through all of you and despite what we can’t control, memories are forever. My condolences to your family.

Q: What will you never forget about Derek?
A: I remember your smile and laugh! You knew how to light up a room. You were always so funny and the life of the party at family get togethers. I remember going on vacation with all of you to visit Justin and Ashley in Virginia. I also remember baby sitting you Kendyl and Dylan! I remember all of you as little babies. I'm sorry I wasn't closer as you guys got older but will forever cherish the good times and family time we all shared together growing up. You will forever be missed and your memory carried on. You were so loved Derek! I know you are watching over your Mom, Dad, Dylan, Kendyl and the rest of the family. Love you ❤️

Q: How would you describe Derek to someone who had never met them?
A: Derek is the kind of person to walk into a room and make every single person in there laugh. He never changed for anyone, he is the kindest, most caring, humble, goofy kid. Derek always knew how to dress!!! Had quite the appreciation for style. Derek radiated Love in every way possible.
We all love you dirk~Trap fam❤️

I’ll never forget watching him nervous from having a bad last outing get called upon to come in with the bases loaded to get the final out and preserve the win . It was minor league baseball he was probably 9 He was the youngest kid on the team and he couldn’t have looked less confident walking to the mound . He took a few warm up pitches that didn’t come close to the catchers mitt let alone the strike zone . His mother watched worried her baby boy would have his ego destroyed. His father and coach had no other pitchers left and reluctantly sent him in as if he were sending him to the firing squad . He walked to the plate with shoulders slumped head hung low .
The batter after what seemed like an eternity stepped to the plate Derek looked around sheepishly at the crowd who was watching him intensely with a mix of hope and trepidation. First pitch strike second pitch strike third pitch strike . The team rushed out of the dug out and hoisted the boy on their shoulders I could see that smile just grow . It was the kind of perfect sports moment you go to a game to see . I remember asking him after how’d you do it . He replied I noticed the batters eyes and they told me he was scared I knew I had him . That was Derek he was funny he was one who rose to the occasion but he also had an intelligence about him that belied that charismatic charm . I was lucky to be your Uncle I’m gonna miss you bro
