Obituary of Mark S. Sopko

Please share a memory of Mark to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mark S. Sopko, age 67, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025. Born on December 31, 1957, he was the son of the late Joseph S. and Helen O. (Abrams) Sopko. He graduated from East Greenbush schools and attended Manhattan College where he earned a Bachelor of Science. Mark then pursued a career in accounting, obtaining a license as a Certified Public Accountant. He held various accounting positions throughout the years, eventually opening his own practice in Kinderhook, NY. Mark's true passion was travel and exploration of the United States, especially its national parks. With his dog Shelby, then Dixie by his side, Mark would drive his RV for several months each year enjoying life on the road, camping, meeting people, and having adventures. During his life, Mark meticulously documented his travels with photographs, journals, maps, memorabilia, and t-shirts from stops made along the way. Mark gave back to his Kinderhook community, where he was a resident for many years, by volunteering as an EMT as well as a youth counselor and little league coach. He was also both proud and humbled to have volunteered as an EMT at the 09/11 Ground Zero site. Of most importance to Mark was his beloved Mets. He kept fastidious notes on every player, game, and season–win or lose–for decades. There has never been a truer fan. Mark is survived by friends and his Kinderhook neighbors; all of whom thought he was absolutely "one of a kind." Rest well now, Mark. Go Mets. Funeral services will be private. If you wish to make a donation honoring Mark, please consider giving to the Columbia Greene Humane Society/SPCA or any animal rescue of choice. Arrangements are with the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie, NY.
