In Loving Memory of Brian Schermerhorn
On April 19, 2025, the world lost a truly irreplaceable soul: Brian K. Schermerhorn, at the age of 63. His passing leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and joy—memories that will remain etched in the hearts of those who knew him.
Born on December 4, 1961 in Albany, NY, Brian lived a life marked by integrity, thoughtfulness, and a steady presence that grounded the people around him. Brian was the beloved son of Joan and Wayne Schermerhorn, who instilled in him a strong moral compass and a deep sense of kindness. He shared a lifelong bond with his brother, David, built on love and steady support through all of life's seasons. Though his family was small, the love they shared was profound, shaping Brian into the thoughtful and generous man so many came to know and admire.
After graduating from Maple Hill High School, Brian went on to study at Paul Smith's College, where he studied Ecology and Environmental Technology and earned an Associate's degree in Applied Science. He later continued his education at The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York, completing a Bachelor's of Science degree.
It was in Syracuse where Brian met the love of his life, Brenda. Married in 1990, they shared 35 years of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. The bond they built was something truly special—marked by deep respect, quiet strength, and a partnership that stood firm through life's joys and challenges. Their love was the kind that radiated outward, touching everyone around them, and it was often said that the connection they shared was both rare and inspiring. Whether facing the everyday or the extraordinary, Brian and Brenda did so hand in hand, their love a constant source of strength and grace.
Above all, Brian was a devoted father to Maria and Hannah, who were his pride and joy. He carried fatherhood with quiet purpose, never needing grand gestures to show how deeply he cared. His love for them was steady and unconditional—felt in the way he listened, the way he showed up, and the way he believed in who they were becoming. He found joy in their laughter, strength in their resilience, and purpose in being the kind of father they could always count on.
Brian dedicated his career to leadership and service, holding roles as a manager at CVS Pharmacy, director at the New York Farm Bureau, and sales representative at Ultradent. In 2000, he joined AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, where he worked as a pharmaceutical sales representative until his retirement in early 2025.
Brian was deeply rooted in his faith and had a genuine love for serving others. As a longtime member of North Chatham United Methodist Church, he devoted many years to working at
the Lord's Acre Auction, a cause close to his heart that brought the community together in support of shared values. He also served as a Sunday school teacher and lay pastor, sharing messages of hope and compassion with sincerity. Through his dedication and generous spirit, Brian lived out his faith in meaningful ways, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Schermerhorn; his daughters, Maria (Zachary) Tinkler and Hannah Schermerhorn; his father, Wayne Schermerhorn; his brother, David (Cynthia) Schermerhorn; his mother-in-law, Frances Ponto; and many beloved brother and sister in-laws, nieces, and nephews—as well as a chosen family of friends who were blessed to have known him. He now joins his mother Joan Schermerhorn, father-in-law Patrick Ponto, and uncle Dean Schermerhorn, in peace and comfort.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the team of doctors, nurses, and caregivers at St. Peter's Cancer Care Center, Albany Med Comprehensive Spine Center Neurosurgery, and Community Hospice who provided Brian with such compassionate and dedicated care during his final months. Your kindness, support, and gentle presence brought comfort not only to him, but to all of us who loved him. Thank you for walking alongside us during this time.
A celebration of Brian's life will be held on Saturday, June 21st at 1 pm at the North Chatham United Methodist Church where friends and loved ones can come together to honor his memory. A remembrance for Brian will also take place during the 8 am mass on May 18th and June 22nd at the Church of St. Mary at Clinton Heights. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Community Hospice Foundation at 310 S. Manning Boulevard, Albany, NY 12208-1771.
He is missed beyond words and loved beyond measure. Brian, we love you, and we're sure you're up there cracking jokes with the best of them. Until we meet again, may you find peace and comfort in God's embrace, surrounded by love and grace, just as you gave so freely to all of us.
