Obituary of Jean T. Smith

Please share a memory of Jean to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Jean T. Smith, 93, of Kinderhook, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2025, at Pine Haven Nursing Home in Philmont, NY. Born on May 29, 1931, in Vermont, she was the cherished daughter of the late Antonio and Gina (Rasetti) Temporelli, and the devoted wife of the late Chandler Smith.

Jean's life was filled with love, laughter, and countless experiences that could never be fully captured in words. She was a beloved teacher in the Chatham Central School District and alongside her husband, Chandler, proudly owned and operated CL Smith Lumber Yard in Chatham.

Jean had a passion for community involvement and giving back. She was an active member of the Kinderhook Garden Club, a supporter of the Columbia Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and served as an elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Valatie. She donned her red hat with pride as a member of the Red Hat Society, was a lifelong member and sponsor of McHayden in Chatham and supported the Columbia County Fair in Chatham. Her kindness extended to countless others as she cooked at church dinners for the Presbyterian Church and volunteered to serve free meals at St. Luke's.

Jean was predeceased by her loving husband, Chandler, her sons Timothy and Stephen, and her beloved dog, Kai. Her memory lives on through her caretaker and daughter-in-law, Chris, whom Jean lovingly referred to as her mother. She is also survived by her grandchild, Rowan, who she proudly reminded was destined to be a lawyer long before anyone else believed it. Rowan lovingly called her grandmother, Gimmy. Her family also includes Lem, who she never hesitated to remind that goodbye hugs didn't require permission—of course, she always wanted one.

Jean loved her family fiercely, and they will miss her well of sass, wisdom, and her ability to make them smile, even during difficult times. She was a constant source of love and advice, and her quick wit will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Her family will especially miss the way she'd always outsmart them in a game of Wheel of Fortune, even with dementia, reminding them of her sharp mind and indomitable spirit.

Jean will be forever loved and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Calling hours will be from 10-12 PM, Thursday, March 6, 2025 with a service to follow, conducted by Rev. Bill Levering from the First Presbyterian Church at 12 PM in the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Jean’s memory by donating to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society and continuing her legacy of community involvement and kindness.
